Olympics - a grand event that evokes patriotism, even skeptics.
We decided to contribute to the preparation process and participated in the closed public competition "The best design torch and portable flame bowl for the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games of Sochi 2014". Although we have not got to the final of the competition but we still enjoyed the opportunity to join the preparatory work for the Olympics. We want to share with you our ideas and our vision of the Olympic flame. We've done a lot of imagery and all are bright and cheerful. Each design - the embodiment of a single concept, each concept has a deep meaning and takes into account the technological aspects of the production.
Like any other major project we start with the design of research, as it is always better to understand the problem from the beginning. Through such research we can save time in the styling and design phase, because of properly chosen direction. We started with the associations and start writing the words on the board, everything that came to mind, all that we might associate with the image of Russia. Brainstorming quite useful exercise you do not need to spend a lot of the time on it but it seriously helps when you are writing the general concept. For this project it was very important to reflect the essence of Russia, "Russian character". And when the concept is ready, designer already formed visual images of the future of the project in the mind.
Later on we proceed to create moodboards by using the images or the words that have been mentioned on team meeting. With this simple tool, we are immersing into the project deeper and can already perceive the project visually. After all the preparations are done, we can sit down and start sketching. Perhaps this is the most interesting and inspiring stage and all methods are good, hand-held pencil sketches on paper, graphics redactors, and even building basic 3D models. Usually we created a big number of concepts, it is important trying to move in different directions and trying to do as much as possible. So far it is quite "raw" ideas that require further analysis and study. Our team is going all together and we discuss what we've got and during in this debate, most of the concept ideas are filtered out. The circle of our concepts begins to narrow, we already have the direction in style and we continuing our work on the project and are finalizing our ideas. Well, then it's getting pretty simple, select those options that best meet customer requirements and this competition, as it was in case with this project.
You can see almost all the stages of the project in this group of slides, starting from moodboards to the final renderings and printouts that we have sent to the contest.
It is certainly pity that the jury chose not our option, but we express our respect and congratulations to the winner. The requirements for this competition is quite high, so we are sure that the winning design is a decent choice.
We had to remove the symbols of the Olympic Games at the request of the Organizing Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi.
